The game is set after the events of Metal Gear Solid 3, with players returning to control the original Snake, who has now become 'Big Boss'. Unlike with Portable Ops, this title is considered official canon within the franchise universe. The gameplay follows the basis set out in previous incarnations, with a major emphasis on stealth and espionage. The over-the-shoulder angle of Metal Gear 4 debuts in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, creating a fusion of the best elements of all previous titles.

Gameplay revolves around a co-op core, following suit with many of today's games in placing emphasis on teamwork. This is implemented throughout Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker in both single player campaigns and multiplayer games, with a variety of alternate 'Snakes' to choose from. These variations range from a stealth bias to heavy weapons expert, allowing players to co-ordinate a well balanced team.

This title marks the first of two games to be released into the Metal Gear franchise this year, with the Raiden-centric Metal Gear Solid Rising to appear on next gen consoles later on. Kojima productions have created a great little title in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, bringing all the classic elements of earlier titles into an innovative new gameplay. The graphics and audio are polished to the highest calibre and the story sounds, as always, to be suitably epic.
